    Luxurious Massages for Health

Not so long ago, massages were viewed as a one- time luxury while on the yearly vacation. In today’s world the massage has shifted to a means of maintaining health and has readily become a component of our lifestyle. We have seen its ability to complement exercise while helping to relieve stress, speed recovery from injuries and boost our overall immunity.

In the US the number of massage therapists has grown from 54,000 to 175,000 over a ten-year period, according to the American Massage Therapy Association. We’ve also witnessed a growing number of individuals who are discovering the benefits of massage. A poll conducted last year showed that 47 million Americans received a massage within 12 months of the survey, a full 2 million more individuals than the prior year, noted by the American Massage Therapy Association. Sixty percent of this group stated that a physician had recommended massage therapy coupled with medication as a way of providing patients with the greatest relief from pain.

There are multiple reasons why people choose certain massages, including they’ve heard it may slow the heart rate, lower stress hormones linked to various diseases and relax the muscles. Massage therapy has been linked to an increase in certain brain chemicals including serotonin, which may help control pain.

Here are five common massages you may discover at resorts and spas throughout the country: Swedish - used to relieve muscle tension, minor back pain and stress. The technique includes a firm but gentle pressure applied along with long, gliding strokes, kneading of individual muscles, friction and tapping. Sports - for repetitive-stress injuries and sports related aches and pains. Therapist focuses on injured or aching body parts with deep pressure and compression. Stretching is also incorporated. Shiatsu - used to relieve depression, headaches, hypertension and insomnia. Steady pressure is applied with fingers and palms. Additionally techniques such as rolling, brushing, and grasping may be utilized. Hot Stone - for muscle knots and stress. Smooth, heated stones are used to perform the long strokes seen in Swedish massage. Heated stones may be placed on points of the body, along the spine to increase energy flow. Deep Tissue - used to relieve chronic joint and muscle injuries. Therapists use many of the techniques seen in Swedish massage with a more intense pressure.

A number of massage therapists use our Sedona Spa Body Balm Moisturizer during their treatments. Often blended with canola oil in a ratio of 4 parts Body Balm to one part canola oil, a fabulous massage lotion is created. Therapists may add their favorite essential oils to complete their clients’ experience. Our Body Balm Moisturizer contains Apricot Kernel Oil, which is an excellent moisturizer and softener for the skin.

Join the growing number of people who are incorporating massages into their lifestyle and discover another means of maintaining your health.

Botanical of the Quarter - Apricot Kernel Oil (Prunus armeniaca)
    Apricot

Apricot Kernel Oil found in Sedona Spa’s Body Balm Moisturizer, is extracted from apricot kernels and has a very high Vitamin E content, aiding in fast absorption. It is rich in the essential fatty acids oleic and linoleic. Apricot Kernel Oil is known for moisturizing skin without leaving an oily feel. Found to be highly compatible with the skin, this oil moisturizes, revitalizes and softens skin while helping to retain clarity and suppleness.

The Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) is a fruit-bearing tree native to China. The tree is related to the plum and is small to medium in height. The leaves of the Apricot tree are shaped like a heart with pointed tips. Flowers are white to pinkish in color with a fruit ranging in color from yellow to orange, its skin smooth and nearly hairless. Apricots are stone fruits and have only one seed each.

The Romans brought the Apricot into Europe around 70 BC, with English settlers bringing the Apricot to the English colonies in the New World. Turkey, which today includes part of historical Armenia, provides 85 percent of the world’s dried apricot and apricot kernels in current markets.

In addition to the benefits offered by Apricot Kernel Oil, fresh or dried apricots are excellent for health. Three small fresh apricots contain more than 50% of the recommended daily intake of beta carotene, a potent antioxidant. Enjoy the world of apricots while moisturizing your skin with Sedona Spa’s Body Balm Moisturizer!
