Botanical of the Quarter - Jojoba (Simmondsia
chinensis) |
|
|
|
Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) ronounced "hohoba" is a small
woody tree or shrub that is native to the Sonoran and Mojave
deserts of Arizona, California and Mexico. It is the only
species of the family Simmondsiaceae. The plant has very high
water use efficiency and Jojoba trees are believed to have a
life span that exceeds 100 years.
The Jojoba grows to approximately 1-2 m in height with a
broad and dense crown. The leaves are oval in shape, opposite
arrangement, approximately 2-4 cm long and 1.5-3 cm across.
The leaves are gray-green in color, thick and waxy in texture.
The flowers are small, greenish-yellow with 5-6 sepals and no
petals. Each plant is either male or female with the fruit
being an acorn-shaped nut. The mature seed is a hard oval,
dark brown in color and contains an oil (liquid wax) content
of approximately 54%. The Jojoba is also called "goat nut"
because feral goats use the nuts as a food source.
Grown for the liquid wax, commonly called Jojoba oil in its
seeds, Jojoba oil is rare in that it is an extremely long
straight chain wax ester and not a triglyceride, making Jojoba
more similar to whale oil than to traditional vegetable oils.
The oil has a variety of uses, with the top grade being used
in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
Treat yourself to this very special moisturizing oil, which
you will find in Sedona Spa's Jojoba Foot Balm, Mountain
Moisture Shampoo and Mountain Moisture Conditioner.
